The Walpack Historical Society

Walpack Township is located in the scenic western section of Sussex County, along the Delaware River. The township includes a section of the Old Mine Road, which is reputed to have been constructed by the early Dutch miners in the mid-1600s as a means of transporting copper ore from the Pahaquarry area to Kingston formerly Esopus, N. Y. At one time it was considered the longest commercial road of note in the colonies. The area was sparsely settled before 1736.

CONTENT

This site has the following in the site, "Welcome to Walpack, New Jersey." We noticed that the web site also stated " Wallpack Township is the Oldest Municipality in Sussex County." It also stated " Walpack Township, formed in 1731 out of Hunterdon County, included the present townships of Montaque, Sandyston and the former Pahaquarry. The Delaware River forms the western boundary and the Old Mine Road, supposedly built by Dutch miners before 1664, traverses the township. Anna Symmes, Mother-in-law of President William Henry Harrison, is buried in the Old Shapanack cemetery." The header had walpack as the highest ranking keyword. It was followed by wallpack, new jersey, and inn which isn't as ranked as highly as walpack. The next words the site uses is history. old mine road was also included and might not be seen by web engines.
